Alchi village is famous for Alchi monastery (gompa), which is the oldest monastery of the Ladakh. According to historians, the Alchi complex was built by the great known translator Guru Rinchen Zangpo between 958 and 1055. However, inscriptions in the preserved monuments ascribe it to a Tibetan noble called Kal-dan Shes-rab later in the 11th century.

As early as the 8th century, individual Buddhist villages were destroyed in the wake of the Muslim invasion of India. During the Mugal invasion in 1197, the Buddhist University of Nalanda and almost all Buddhist monasteries in India were destroyed. In the immediate aftermath, Buddhism almost completely disappeared from the Indian heartland.
Only the monasteries of Alchi in Ladakh and Tabo in Spiti remained untouched. Unlike most Buddhist monasteries, Alchi is not prominently visible from afar on a mountainside. As monasteries were also destroyed north of Alchi in the Indus Valley, it was probably simply overlooked by the invaders. The style of the numerous wall paintings is therefore unique today. You will look in vain for comparable paintings in other monasteries built later.

The Tsatsapuri complex was built sometime between the 13th and 15th centuries, and consists of three buildings arranged around a central courtyard, plus a ruined residential wing. The upstairs room on the western side, which is the oldest part built originally as a residence for a lama, has murals on the northwest wall showing scenes from the life of Drigung Kyopa Jigten Gonpo Rinchen Pal (‘Bri gung skyob pa ‘jig rten mgon po Rin chen dpal 1143-1217). The inscription mentions his nephew Drigung Lingpa (‘Bri gung gling pa), one of the masters responsible for the spread of the Drigung Kagyu school in the western Himalayas in the 13th century .

Most of the rock art found in Alchi was made on boulders scattered along a shelf rising above the south bank of the Indus River, approximately one and a quarter miles (two kilometers) northwest of the village of Alchi and its renowned Buddhist temple complex. Carvers favored boulders covered in a shiny dark purplish patina for embellishment. In addition to ibex hunting scenes, petroglyphs at the site display ibexes engraved together with spotted carnivores resembling snow leopards, facsimiles of stepped architectural structures, including elaborate stupa, a menagerie of animals, groups of swastikas, and combat or martial contests.5 Rock art with the same types of subjects and compositions rendered in analogous styles can be seen all along a sixty-two-mile (a hundred-kilometer) stretch of the Indus River extending from Alchi to Dah. Some of the boulders with rock art in Alchi and nearby sites contain Tibetan inscriptions composed during the Tibetan Imperial period (ca. 600–850 CE).
